Obverse

The obverse design showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty. In his depiction of Lady Liberty, she is seen walking away from the Capitol in Washington D.C. with the sun gleaming off of her back. In one hand, she carries an olive branch. In the other, she lifts a flaming torch. This design is called the Gold Double Eagle, which is the name of the coin it was originally debuted in 1907.

Reverse

The reverse image is Miley Busieks bald eagle family design that was created just for these coins in 1986. In the image, a large male eagle returns to his family nest with an olive branch in his talons. A female and hatchling are waiting for him in the nest.

History

The United States Mint launched the American Eagle Coin program in 1986 with a more limited selection than we are used to today. Now, you can buy four different weights of American Eagle Gold Coins: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. There are three different options for finishes: bullion, proof, and uncirculated, although the uncirculatedalso called burnishedarent released each year in each size.

The mint has also created American Eagles in three additional metal types: silver, platinum, and palladium. Each different metal type will feature a unique design with the same Americana-focused themes.
