Obverse
The obverse of 1991-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coins comes with a historic image of Liberty. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it features Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Liberty is encircled by stars, backed by sun rays, and walking near the U.S. Capitol Building. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, MCMXCI, and the ASC signature mark of Saint-Gaudens.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1991 Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins, you will find a depiction of American bald eagles. Here, a male eagle is shown soaring over the nest as a female eagle guards hatchlings within the nest. History
The 1991 release of Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins was unique in two ways. First, at the time it was the lowest mintage in the series. Secondly, and more important to the future of the series, this was the last release with date marks in Roman numerals.
