One of the most sought-after gold coins in the US is the Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold coin. It even beats out the American Eagle Gold coin! Its brilliant designs and the purity of its gold are the reasons for this. Originally minted in 99.9% pure gold, it was one of only two pure gold bullion coins minted in 1979. This exquisite coin is the official gold bullion coin of Canada, with its purity and weight guaranteed by the Canadian Government. This 1988 coin is minted in 99.99% pure gold. Provident Metals is pleased to offer the 1988 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin available for purchase right now.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • 10th issue of the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Bears a face value of $50 (CAD) backed by the Canadian Government.
  • A Queen Elizabeth II profile is featured on the obverse.
  • A Maple Leaf is featured on the reverse.

Founded in Ottawa in 1908, the highly regarded Royal Canadian Mint is the official mint of Canada. It produces all of Canadas circulation coins. In the 1980s, when it became necessary to boost production capacity, a second production facility was opened in Winnipeg.

Obverse

The 1988 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin obverse is graced with a right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II. This profile depicts Her Majesty at 39 years of age. Later updates to Her Majestys profile would depict her at 64 years of age and then at 79 years of age. In that most recent depiction, she is not wearing a crown. Queen Elizabeth II has been featured on the obverse of all Canadian coins since she ascended to the throne in 1952. Inscriptions on the obverse are ELIZABETH II and 50 DOLLARS 1988.

Reverse

The 1988 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin reverse is graced with a Maple Leaf, which is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians. The texture and fine veins of the Maple Leaf were masterfully captured in this design by master engraver Walter Ott. His Maple Leaf design has remained virtually unchanged throughout the years, and has been featured on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins. Inscriptions on the reverse are CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

The Royal Canadian Mint initially minted a 99.9% pure gold, 1 oz weight of the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin. Four years later, the RCM sweetened the deal by increasing the purity of the gold to 99.99% pure gold, making it the first bullion coin to be minted at such a high gold purity. In addition, they also began to produce them in additional weights. In 1988, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coins were available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. Later years saw the addition of 1/20 oz and 1 gram weights. With the high purity of its gold, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin is regarded as the standard by which 24-karat gold bullion coins are judged. Its face value is stated in Canadian Dollars and its considered legal tender.
