History

When the American Eagle Gold coin was first introduced in 1986, it was released in a 1 oz denomination. It wasnt until 1987 when the oz denomination was released and marked with a P mint mark to symbolize its issuance from the Philadelphia Mint. Since 1987, the oz Gold Eagle coin has been in production; however, its issuance was transitioned to the West Point Mint in 1993.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is shown on the obverse of the 1987-P Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin. Augustus Saint-Gaudens created this patriotic design, and it has been used as a featured obverse design on many coins released from the United States Mint. In the image, Lady Liberty walks forward toward the viewer with rays of sun extending out in the background. In her hands, Lady Liberty holds a torch and an olive branch.

Reverse

The reverse design on the 1987-P Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin, which was originally created by Miley Busiek, shows a family of eagles. In the image, a male eagle is seen flying overhead carrying an olive branch in its talons. He flies toward the nest, where the female eagle and her eaglets sit waiting. The reverse also shows the coins weight, country of origin, purity, and value.
