American Eagle Silver Coins were introduced by the United States Mint in 1986. Available only in 1 oz silver, the coins initially featured a bullion option for investors and these proof coins for collectors. A secondary collectible coin, the burnished version, would be released in 2006 to mark the 20th anniversary of the series. Available across four different decades, the 1986 Proof American Eagle Silver Coin remains the highest mintage in series history.

Obverse

Walking Liberty graces the obverse of the 1986-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin. After nearly 40 years out of circulation, the design was revived in 1986 by the US Mint for use on the national silver bullion coin series. It depicts Liberty walking from right to left on the design set with one hand reaching for the sun on the horizon as the other carries branches of oak and laurel. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, it first featured on the US half dollar from 1916 to 1947.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States was initially created in 1792 and struck on the earliest coins from the US Mint. As of 1986, a modern vision of the national seal appears on the reverse of the 1986 Proof American Eagle Silver Coins. This version of the design was modified in 1986 by John Mercanti and features the traditional elements of the national heraldic shield, arrows of war, and olive branch of peace.

History

A total of 1,446,778 coins were sold in the 1986 Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin release. Neither growing demand for silver nor anniversary date marks have propelled another coin this high in the years since the program debuted. The only coin to come close was the 2006 Proof American Eagle, with the 20th-anniversary release selling 1,092,477 coins. Even if you add in the 248,875 reverse proof collectible coins sold that year, you still wont surpass the 1986 mintage.

Ordering

These 1986-S Proof American Eagle Silver Coins are in perfect condition. Each coin has full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws. Further, the coins have stunning contrast courtesy of strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear fields.
