1986 was a monumental year for modern American coinage. On November 24 of that year, the US Mint launched the American Silver Eagle, now the nation’s official silver bullion coin. Composed of one troy ounce of .999 pure silver mined exclusively from American soil, the ASE is backed and guaranteed by the government of the United States.
Each of these 1986 American Silver Eagles has been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and Mint State 69 Grade has been assigned! A coin graded Mint State 69 means it has its original luster, and there are no more than two flaws noted on its surface. The coin has a sharp strike with no scuffs or hairlines, and it has a near-flawless appearance.
Designed by sculptor Adolph Weinman, the obverse features the full-length figure of Lady Liberty in full stride, walking proudly towards a rising sun and an ever-brighter future. Her shoulders are wrapped in the billowing American flag, with her right hand extended toward the horizon. She carries laurel branches in her left arm, symbolizing America’s civic and military greatness. This iconic design is boldly engraved with the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the year of issue.
The American Silver Eagle’s reverse, designed by former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, hearkens to the great seal of the United States. A heraldic eagle with outstretched wings carries a banner in its beak that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM (out of many, one)”. It clutches the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. A striped shield protects the great bird, while 13 stars representing the original colonies soar above its head. Also included are inscriptions of the coin’s weight, purity, and legal tender value.
Since 1792, the US Minthas earned a reputation as one of the leading producers of precious metal bullion products in the world. Their products are in demand the world over for their superior workmanship and aesthetics honoring the rich history, iconic symbols, and unwavering spirit of this great nation.
