The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins debuted in 1979 and started with a 1 oz gold option. From 1979 to November 1982, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin series offered only this 1 oz gold coin with a purity of .999 gold. Starting in 1983, the series offered its first full year with new options and greater purity levels for the gold. Today, you have the chance to buy 1983 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective flip!
  • 5th year of issue in the Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Series!
  • Total mintage of 695,000 gold coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The face value of $50 (CAD) is backed by Canada.
  • On the obverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse features a sugar maple leaf.

With the introduction of the Canadian Maple Leaf, the gold bullion market finally had a coin to compete with the South African Gold Krugerrand. The Krugerrand had been introduced in 1967 as a vehicle to promote South African gold and offer individuals an option for private gold ownership. However, with economic sanctions and boycotts on the horizon for South Africa as a result of its apartheid system, the Royal Canadian Mint saw an opportunity to offer Western investors another choice.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 1983 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins, you will find Arnold Machins effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The second-generation effigy of the Queen to grace Canadian coins, this portrait captures the monarch at the age of 39 in right-profile relief. Inscriptions on this side include ELIZABETH II, D.G. REGINA, and 50 DOLLARS.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 1983 Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin comes with a depiction of the sugar maple leaf. Designed in 1979 by Walter Ott, this visual shows the national emblem at the center with inscriptions of CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

In November 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint enhanced the gold purity of the coins from .999 to .9999. It also introduced 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins into the series. The 1983 release was the first full year to feature both greater gold purity and additional fractional-ounce coin options.

Ordering

These 1983 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins are available with protective flips. The release of 1983 1 oz gold coins in this series resulted in sales of 695,000 coins, the lowest figure to date in the series.
