The official gold bullion coin of Canada, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold, was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979. Initially minted in 99.9% pure gold, it was one of two pure gold bullion coins minted at that time. The purity of its gold and its weight are guaranteed by the Canadian Government. The RCM, known for its brilliant designs and the purity of its gold, has created a Maple Leaf Gold coin that is one of the most sought-after coins in the US. Provident Metals is pleased to currently offer the 1981 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin available for purchase.

The official sovereign mint of Canada is the Royal Canadian Mint. Founded in Ottawa in 1908, it produces all of Canadas circulation coins. In the 1980s, when it became necessary to boost production capacity, a second facility was opened in Winnipeg.

Obverse

A right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II adorns the obverse of the 1981 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin. Her Majesty has adorned the obverse of all Canadian coinage since taking the throne of the UK in 1952. This version depicts the Queen at the age of 39. Later versions of her profile would depict the Queen at the age of 64 and then at the age of 79. Queen Elizabeth II is not wearing her crown in her profile at the age of 79. Inscriptions on the obverse are ELIZABETH II and 50 DOLLARS 1981.

Reverse

Canadas unofficial emblem the Maple Leaf adorns the reverse of the 1981 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin. The Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians. This beautiful design was created by master engraver Walter Ott, and clearly details the texture and veins of the Maple Leaf. While remaining basically unchanged through time, this design is used on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins. Inscriptions on the reverse are CANADA, 999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin was initially minted in 99.9% pure gold and, as such, was and still is regarded as the standard by which all 24-karat gold bullion coins are judged. In November 1982, the RCM upped the ante and started minting the coins in 99.99% pure gold. The Maple Leaf Gold coins were initially available in only the 1 oz denomination. When the RCM increased the gold purity in November 1982, they also began making the coins available in additional weights. First, it was 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz weights. In 1986, it was a 1/2 oz weight and in 1993, it was a 1/20 oz weight. For one year only, in 1994, a 1/15 oz weight was offered. Lastly, in 2014, a 1 gram weight was added. Considered to be legal tender, each Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin has a stated face value in Canadian Dollars.
