In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin in 99.9% pure gold. Along with the South African Krugerrands, these were the only two pure gold bullion coins minted at that time. Known for its brilliant designs and the purity of its gold, the RCM has created a Maple Leaf Gold coin that is sought after by collectors and investors alike. The Maple Leaf Gold is the official gold bullion coin of Canada, and its weight and purity is guaranteed by the Canadian Government. Currently, Provident Metals is pleased to offer the 1980 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin available for purchase.

The Royal Canadian Mint is the official sovereign mint of Canada. It was originally founded in Ottawa in 1908, where it operated in this lone facility until the 1980s. A second facility was opened in Winnipeg at that time to boost production capacity. The RCM produces all of Canadas circulation coins.

Obverse

This 1980 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin obverse features a right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II. This version depicts a 39-year-old Queen wearing her crown. There have been two updated depictions of the Queen that have appeared on more recent Maple Leaf coins, one of the Queen at age 64 and more recently, at age 79, without a crown. Queen Elizabeth II has been featured on the obverse of all Canadian coinage since taking the throne in 1952. Inscriptions on the obverse are ELIZABETH II and 50 DOLLARS 1980.

Reverse

This 1980 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin reverse features the Maple Leaf. Master engraver Walter Ott created this lovely design, clearly detailing the texture and veins of a Maple Leaf. This Ott-created design was to be used on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins, and it has remained basically unchanged. As Canadas unofficial emblem, the Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians. Inscriptions on the reverse are CANADA, 999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin has been issued annually since its introduction. They have been regarded as the standard by which other 24-karat gold bullion coins are judged, primarily due to the consistency of their design and mintage. The Maple Leaf Gold coins were initially minted in 99.9% pure gold and available in only the 1 oz weight. In November 1982, the RCM increased its gold purity to 99.99%. In addition, at that time, the RCM began minting additional weights. Over time, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/20 oz, and finally, 1 gram weights were added. Considered to be legal tender, each Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin has a stated face value in Canadian Dollars.
