History

George T. Morgan was born in England in 1845. Morgan was initially employed at the British Royal Mint, where he gained a strong reputation as a hard-working and talented assistant engraver. At the time, the US Mint was concerned that the general public was dissatisfied with the current state of American coinage, especially in comparison to the British productions overseas. Morgan was thus recruited to become assistant Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint in 1876. Two years later, his masterpiece, the Morgan Silver Dollar, would enter circulation.
