The Mercury Dime marked the last appearance of Lady Liberty on the US 10-cent denomination coin. In 1946, the bust of President Franklin D. Roosevelt was added to the coin and remains there to this day. The Mercury Dime design was immensely popular in its day as a replacement for the Barber Coinage design. Obverse

In the obverse design, Mercury Silver Dimes feature the image of Liberty in left-profile relief that Adolph A. Weinman created in 1916. The image of Liberty shown here is known as Winged Liberty and was colloquially referred to in the United States as the Mercury Dime rather than the Winged Liberty dime because of Libertys resemblance to the Roman messenger god Mercury.

Reverse

The reverse field of the Mercury Silver Dime was also created by Weinman. He created a simple design that showcased the Roman fasces with an olive branch around it. The fasces, in Roman times, symbolized ones right to rule and their power in doing so. The combination of the fasces with the olive branch symbolized Americas growing power, but also its desire for peace at a time when it was doing all it could to stay out of the raging World War I conflict in Europe.

History

Adolph A. Weinman submitted his designs for the half dollar and dime in 1916 as the United States Mint sought to replace the images from the Barber Coinage Series. His half dollar design was known as Walking Liberty, while this dime design became known as the Mercury Dime rather than Winged Liberty. At this time, all US silver denominations had 90% silver content with a balance of 90% copper for durability.
