The $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin has a unique distinction among the various designs and denominations in the US Eagle Series. That unique distinction comes in the form of the mints that struck the coins over the course of its 70-year history. The US Mint had a total of seven branch mints during the period of the Half Eagles production, and at some point in time all seven of these mints had a hand in coining the $5 Liberty Half Eagle.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 1900 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins is an effigy of Lady Liberty. Known as the Liberty Head design, this left-profile bust was created in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht, 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The design element includes a ring of 13 stars and a date mark of 1900.

Reverse

The reverse field of 1900 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins depicts the heraldic eagle of the United States. Gobrecht is also responsible for this design and it includes a bald eagle in front-facing relief. The eagle clutches the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war as it supports the US national shield. There is a banner over its head that reads In God We Trust. This was added to the coins in 1866. Inscriptions include United States of America and Five D.

History

The $5 Liberty Half Eagle was first struck in 1838 by the Charlotte Mint and Dahlonega Mint, both of which used locally-sourced gold from mines in the Carolinas and Georgia to produce the coins. The Philadelphia Mint also issued the coins starting in 1838. The New Orleans Mint struck the coins from 1840 to 1861. The San Francisco Mint started striking the coins when it opened in 1854. The Carson City Mint also began striking the coins when it opened in 1870 and did so until 1893 when it closed. The Denver Mint issued its first Liberty Half Eagle in 1906.
