The Liberty Head Eagle Coin, a well-known $10 gold piece from the US Mint, holds the distinction of having the longest-running design in the Eagle denomination series. Created by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the US Mint, this design first appeared in 1838 and was used on $10, $5, and $2.50 Eagles. Among them, the $10 Liberty Eagle was produced the longest, up until 1907. Right now, 1897 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins in certified condition are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1897 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin comes in Mint State 63 condition, housed in a plastic slab for protection. Coins graded MS63 show minor contact marks, a few heavier marks, and slightly diminished mint luster. Hairlines may also be present as small patches or scattered flaws.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1897 $10 Liberty Eagle Coin features Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Designed in 1838, she is shown wearing a coronet crown, with 13 stars encircling her portrait and the year of issue inscribed below. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1897.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1897 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin is Christian Gobrechts heraldic eagle design. The eagle faces forward, with the US national shield on its chest and an olive branch and arrows in its talons. As a Type II coin, this design also includes a banner above the eagle bearing the national motto. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TEN D.
History
In 1897, the Liberty Gold Eagle was minted at three different US Mint facilities: Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The Philadelphia Mint took the lead, producing over 1 million coins. By comparison, the New Orleans Mint issued just 42,500 coins, and the San Francisco Mint struck around 234,000.
