The production of Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins took place at five different branch mints between 1850 and 1907. The Philadelphia Mint was the only mint to issue the coins each year during this period. The New Orleans Mint issued the coins from 1850 to 1861. The Carson City Mint issued Liberty Double Eagles from 1870 to 1893, with intermittent interruptions in production. The Denver Mint struck the coins twice, in 1906 and 1907. The San Francisco Mint issued the coins from 1854 to 1907, making it the second-longest issuer of the coins behind Philadelphia.

Obverse

This ornate version includes a front-facing eagle with the US national shield, arrows of war, and olive branch of peace. The ring of 13 stars overhead includes an inscription of IN GOD WE TRUST. Other inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.

History

In 1896, the Philadelphia Mint issued 792,535 coins in the Liberty Double Eagle Series. The San Francisco Mint nearly doubled that figure with a total mintage of 1,403,925 coins.
