The 20 Francs denomination that originated in France in the early 19th century became a powerhouse form of gold currency in Europe during that same century. Even after it was no longer a continental phenomenon, the 20 Francs coin was available in nations such as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 1892 20 Francs/8 Florin Austrian Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives inside of a protective plastic flip!
  • Restrike issue that includes only the 1892 date mark!
  • Contains .1867 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • The face value of 20 Francs/8 Florin is backed by Austria.
  • Franz Joseph I features on the obverse of the coins.
  • Crowned arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the reverse.

1892 marked the year that the Austro-Hungarian Empire converted to the gold standard. This was the same year that it introduced Francs denominations similar to the nations that had released the Francs denomination in the Latin Monetary Union.

Obverse

Emperor Franz Joseph I was the third-longest reigning monarch in European history. He ruled as the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, holding the crown of the former for a longer period of time than the latter as the two crowns were not merged until after he had risen to the seat of power in the Empire of Austria. Franz Joseph I is depicted in this design in right-profile relief with a wreath crown and inscriptions that identify him and his status.

Reverse

The crowned arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire feature on the reverse of these restrike gold coins. The series features the double-headed eagle of the Habsburg Dynasty that was adopted by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The double-headed eagle is representative of the need to look toward the future on one hand, but remember the past by looking at the history of a nation and people.

History

These particular coins were produced by the Austrian Mint in 1892 as restrikes of the popular 20 Francs gold coin, but also had the distinction of carrying the dual denomination of 8 Florin previously released in the Austro-Hungarian Empire prior to the adoption of the gold standard and 20 Francs gold coins.

Ordering

1892 20 Francs/8 Florin Austrian Gold Coins in this listing are available to you inside of protective plastic flips. The coins are in average circulated condition with small signs of wear and tear on the highest design elements of the coins.
