Morgan Dollars are among the most collected coins ever produced by the US Mint. In particular, collectors seek out those rare Morgan dollars that have slight errors or variations in their design. Here, you will find the iconic Gator and Clash Morgan, which contains one of the more unique minting errors in the coins history. Provident Metals now has 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins in certified condition available to purchase online.
Coin Highlights:
When you purchase 1887 Morgan Dollar Coins in this Provident Metals online listing, you will receive a genuine silver legal tender specimen struck at the US Mint. These coins were later sent to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, where they received an official grade of Mint State 65. These coins will arrive in the protection of a plastic slab. Above the coin, in the slab, you will find the NGC label that carries both the grade and the VAM details.
Obverse
The obverse of 1887 Morgan Silver Dollars features a bust of Lady Liberty. Upon the recommendation of artist Thomas Eakins, engraver George T. Morgan sought the help of American teacher Anna Willess Williams in crafting this portrait. Williams sat five times for Morgan, resulting in one of the most recognizable coin effigies of all time. Youll find inscriptions also on the obverse that read E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1887.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, there is a rendition of the heraldic eagle. Compared to more recent designs, this image by Morgan has a simplified aesthetic drawn with clean, uncomplicated lines. Above the eagles head are the words IN GOD WE TRUST. Extending across the rim are additional inscriptions reading UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST.
History
In 1996, Dr. Michael Fey and Jeff Oxman compiled the top 100 VAM Morgan Silver Dollars so that collectors had a definitive list to work off of. Making the list was the Gator and Clash, which has some highly unusual errors on both fields. In addition to clash marks brought about by damaged dies, the coin also includes an extra eyelid on the portrait of Lady Liberty. Collectors noticed that it resembled the nictitating membrane found in alligators, hence its VAM nickname.
