One of the last continuous issues of the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin at the Carson City Mint came in 1884. After this release, the Carson City Mint would issue the coins in 1885 and then undergo a three-year pause in coining. In total, Carson City offered 13 date marks for the Morgan Dollar, with the 1884 coin landing in the middle of the mintage figures for the series as a whole. Today, you have the chance to get certified 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.

The 1884 release of Morgan Dollars from Carson City had a modest mintage within the 13 date marks from the mint. The total of 1,136,000 coins in 1884 was the sixth-highest mintage in the 13 offerings of Morgan Dollars from the mint. However, this figure is dwarfed by the volume of coins issued by the other three branch mints in 1884. The 1.136 million coins is just over one-third that of the San Francisco Mints 3.2 million coins issued, nearly one-tenth that of the 9.73 million coins from the New Orleans Mint, and a staggering 1/14th that of the 14.07 million coins from the Philadelphia Mint.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1884-CC Morgan Dollars is an effigy of Lady Liberty. This portrait of Liberty in left-profile relief was created in 1878 and features a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and laurel wreath on her head. The bottom half of the design field includes 13 stars, with inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM overhead, LIBERTY on the coronet, and 1884 at the bottom.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin includes the heraldic eagle. This design was also created in 1878 and shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief. The design includes the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in the eagles talons, with an oak-and-laurel wreath below. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of Carson City.

History

One of the more astonishing facets of the 1884-CC Morgan Dollar is the volume of the coins that were discovered in the 20th century. The discovery of millions of Morgan Dollars from the 19th century in Treasury vaults in the 1960s included 84.7% of the total mintage from 1884 at the Carson City Mint. Of the 1.136 million coins struck at Carson City, 962,638 were just sitting in Treasury vaults in the 1960s.

Ordering

These 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with an MS65 grade have mint luster that is above-average, with small contact marks, the potential for as many as two heavier contact marks, and small hairlines.
