Obverse

Featuring a bust of Lady Liberty, the obverse side of the coin carries the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1883.” Thirteen decorative stars at the rim represent each of the Union’s founding states.

The reverse side of the coin features a heraldic eagle clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in each of its talons. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

History

A rising demand for silver dollars in the late Fifties and early Sixties led to the transformative discovery of what eventually would be called the GSA Hoard of Morgans, previously uncirculated coins that had resided in the Treasury’s vaults for decades. A supply of three million silver dollars, many of them having come from the Carson City Mint in the 19th century, was discovered during the Sixties and put up for auction by the General Services Administration in the Seventies and the early Eighties. One of the most numerous coins in the hoard was the 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar, which remains one of the most popular collector’s items on the market to this day.
