When it comes to collectible silver dollars from the United States Mint, certain Morgan Dollar Silver Coins once ranked among the hardest to find. This included some of the earliest issues from the Carson City Mint. The rarity of the coins was based on the original date of issue some 150 years ago and the low original mintages at the Carson City Mint. The discovery of hoards of GSA Morgan Dollars in the 1960s flipped the narrative on rarity for some coins. Provident Metals now has 1882-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available to you for purchase online with GSA packaging.

When the US Treasury discovered a hoard of Morgan Dollars in the 1960s, the Government Services Administration audited and packaged the coins to hold public auctions for collectors. The coins were individually packaged inside of hard plastic holders with a presentation box and a Certificate of Authenticity included.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1882-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is a bust of Lady Liberty. Created in 1878 by George T. Morgan, this effigy shows Liberty with a coronet inscribed with the word Liberty, as well as a wreath crown and a cap at the back of her head. There is a ring of 13 stars on this side with inscriptions of E Pluribus Unum and 1882.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1882 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features a 19th-century depiction of the heraldic eagle. The Morgan Dollar design was one of the few early heraldic eagle images to lack a US national shield. The front-facing eagle is shown holding the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. There are inscriptions on this face of the coins that read United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar. Carson City Mint coins have a CC mint mark located above the D in the word dollar and below the tail feathers of the eagle.

History

The 1882 release of Carson City Mint Morgan Dollars was one of a handful that saw more than half of the original mintage survive into the 20th century in uncirculated condition. This occurred because many of the coins were sent straight to US Treasury vaults after coining at the mint and never issued into circulation. The Treasury later discovered the coins and auctioned them off to collectors in a series of public auctions in the 1970s and early 1980s. Of the 1,113,000 coins struck in 1882, the GSA discovered 605,000 sitting in the Treasury vaults in the 1960s.
