Morgan Dollar coins were introduced by the United States Mint in 1878. The coins replaced the Seated Liberty Dollar and would go on to become the second-longest-running design in American silver dollar history. The coins were issued from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, with only two mints issuing the coins every year. Right now, you can buy certified 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Provident Metals is pleased to offer the 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin online with a certification from the PCGS. Coins in Mint State 67 condition exhibit original mint luster with a quality strike for the design given the date. Coins in this condition can also exhibit as many as four small contact marks, with the potential for one or two of those to feature in the primary focal fields. One or two small hairlines, only visible with magnification, may also be present.
Obverse
Lady Liberty features on the obverse side of 1881-S Morgan Dollar Coins. The image of Liberty is set in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and coronet crown in her hair. There are 13 stars along the lower half edges of the design field. Inscriptions on this side include E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1881.
Reverse
For the reverse design of 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, the heraldic eagle of the United States is depicted on the coins. The design shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief with its head looking to the left as the bird clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The bird is framed by a laurel wreath and there is an S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint beneath the wreath. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The San Francisco Mint issued Morgan Dollar Silver Coins every year that the coins were issued by the US Mint. The 1881-S Morgan Dollar had the highest mintage of any coin at this branch facility between 1878 and 1904 with 12,760,000 coins issued. The next closest was more than 300,000 coins lower. Only the 1921-S had a higher mintage at the San Francisco Mint.
