With your purchase of the 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a coin that is available in Mint State 63 condition with a plastic slab to house the specimen. MS63 coins exhibit impaired mint luster with several small contact marks, some heavier contact marks, and/or light hairlines visible without the aid of magnification.

Obverse

For the obverse design of the 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Coin, you will find George T. Morgans effigy of Liberty. This left-profile relief shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with the coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair. There are 13 stars along the edge of the design field with inscriptions of LIBERTY on the coronet, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the 1881 date mark.

Reverse

In the reverse field of 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, the mint features the image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. First designed in 1794, this version was created by Morgan in 1878 and shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other. The eagle is framed by a wreath of oak and laurel. The field includes inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint.

History

Originally assumed to be rare in the 20th century due to its incredibly low mintage, in the 1960s roughly half the original mintage of the 1881-CC Morgan Dollar was discovered in Treasury vaults. From the original 296,000-coin mintage, Treasury vaults were holding a total of 147,485 coins that were later sold at auction in the 1970s.
