Morgan Dollars are perhaps the most popular US silver dollars available to collectors. Issued from 1878-1904 and again in 1921, the Morgan Dollar has been out of production for more than a century. Some of the earliest date marks in the series are hard to find today, both due to the age of the series and the fact that countless Morgan Dollars were melted down by the US Mint in the early 20th century. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a hard plastic holder, presentation box, and a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • 3rd year of issue in the Morgan Dollar Silver Series!
  • Initial mintage of just 591,000 silver dollars!
  • Contains .77344 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is backed by the United States of America.

  • The reverse includes a depiction of the heraldic eagle.
  • Bears a CC mint mark from the Carson City Mint.

In 1880, the Carson City Mint was in its third year of production for Morgan Dollars, as was the program as a whole. For the third time in a row, the Carson City Mint issued lower overall volumes of Morgan Dollars than the Philadelphia Mint and the San Francisco Mint. The Carson City Mint issued Morgan Dollars for 13 years in total from 1878 to 1885 and 1889 to 1893, and the 1880 issue was the third-lowest at just 591,000 coins in total.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1880-CC Morgan Dollar is a depiction of Lady Liberty. This portrait of Liberty was created in 1878 by George T. Morgan with Anna Willess Williams have sat through portrait sessions with Morgan to come up with this image. The left-profile portrait shown here includes a coronet and wreath crown in her hair, with Liberty inscribed on the coronet. Included along with the ring of 13 stars around the portrait are inscriptions of E Pluribus Unum and 1880.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Morgan also created this design for the silver dollar in 1878 and it shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief. The eagle is shown with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Inscriptions include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and One Dollar. The CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint is found within the field below the tail feathers of the eagle and above the D in the word dollar.

History

In the 1960s, the US Treasury discovered a vast hoard of uncirculated Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, 95% of which were Carson City Mint coins that went direct from the mint to the US Treasury after coining in the 1870s and 1880s. From the original 1880 mintage of 591,000 coins, 131,500 coins were found in the US Treasury vaults and eventually auctioned off to collectors in the 1970s and 1980s by the Government Services Administration.

Ordering
