Obverse

Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse face of the 1878-1904 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. This bust of Liberty was created by George T. Morgan, then an Assistant Engraver at the United States Mint, in 1878. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include E Pluribus Unum and a date mark, with 13 stars also engraved on this side.

Reverse

George T. Morgans version of the heraldic eagle is found on the reverse of 1878-1904 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. Morgans version of the heraldic eagle did not feature the US national shield. It features only the front-facing American bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and olive branch of peace. The inscriptions read United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar.

History

The Seated Liberty Silver Dollar was a popular release from the United States Mint, but in 1873 the US Mint ended the free coining of silver, and with it the Seated Liberty design. Morgan Dollars were primarily issued from 1878 to 1904, with one subsequent release in 1921. The Morgan Dollar design was followed by the Peace Dollar, the final circulation coin, and the Eisenhower Dollar.
