Obverse
The obverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin showcases James B. Longacres depiction of Lady Liberty. Styled in a Greco-Roman fashion, Liberty is adorned with a coronet crown in left-profile relief, surrounded by 13 stars and the year of issue. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1877.
Reverse
On the reverse side, the 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features Longacres heraldic eagle. The eagle, clutching a double ribbon, has a shield on its chest, a variation of the Great Seal of the United States. Inscriptions read TWENTY DOLLARS, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
History
The Double Eagle was a staple in American currency from 1849 until 1933. James B. Longacres Liberty design graced these coins from their inception until 1907. After nearly 60 years, President Theodore Roosevelt sought to revamp American coinage, leading to the creation of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Interestingly, there were three different design variants of the Liberty Double Eagle and the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle during its years of issue.
