Originally, the eagle ($10) was the highest denomination under the Mint Act of 1792. The double eagle, with a face value of $20, was introduced by the Coinage Act of 1849 following the California Gold Rush. Although these coins were first struck in 1850, two 1849 proof strikes exist, with one housed at the Smithsonian Institution.
