King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy began his life of royal leadership as the King of Sardinia. He would rise from his position of power ruling the island kingdom to unify the kingdoms and city-states of the Italian peninsula under his control.

Obverse

Victor Emmanuel II of Italy is on the obverse side of 1863 10 Lire Italian Gold Coins. The left-profile portrait features his famous beard and depicts him without a crown. The legend inscribed around the portrait features his name in Italian as Vittorio Emanuele II and 1863.

Reverse

In the reverse design of 1863 10 Lire Italian Gold Coins, you will find the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Italy. Based upon the House of Savoy coat of arms, this new version captured the spirit of unification with a shield split into quadrants by a cross and topped by a crown with a wreath around the shield. The inscriptions on this face of the coin are again in Italian and read Regno DItalia, or King of Italy. The other inscription is that of the denomination as L10.

History

Victor Emmanuel II of Italy began to grab control of the Italian peninsula through the Expedition of the Thousand in 1860. After the fall of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, he was able to take control of southern Italy. Tuscany, Modena, Parma, and Romagna joined his Sardinia-Piedmont alliance in 1860 and later took Teano. He later annexed Veneto after the Third Italian War of Independence and later conquered Rome, ending the thousand-year reign of the Papal States and established his capital in Rome.
