The Liberty Head Double Eagle, minted from 1850 to 1907, is a significant piece of American coin history. The 1850-O $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin marks the first year of this notable design. These certified coins are now available at Provident Metals, offering collectors a rare piece of numismatic history.
Coin Highlights:
The $20 Double Eagle was introduced as a result of the California Gold Rush, expanding the US Eagle series. This coin, minted in Philadelphia and New Orleans, featured the Liberty design, with New Orleans coins marked with an “O” mint mark.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1850-O $20 Gold Double Eagle, Lady Liberty is depicted in a left-profile relief. Designed by James B. Longacre, she wears a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1850.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1850-O Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin features the Great Seal of the United States, also designed by Longacre. The bald eagle, with the US national shield, clutches arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing readiness for both war and peace. This design embodies the nation’s strength and ideals. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY D., and the O mint mark of the New Orleans Mint.
History
The building housing the New Orleans Mint was designed by William Strickland in the Greek Revival style. It is one of the oldest surviving structures to have served as a United States Mint, and it is considered an important example of Greek Revival architecture in the United States.
