The Austrian Mint is one of the oldest operating facilities in Europe having been founded in 1194 by Duke Leopold V of Austria. For a long stretch of Austrian history, the empire that preceded the modern state was ruled by the House of Babenberg. In 1976, the Austrian Mint celebrated the 1,000th anniversary of the establishment of the House of Babenbergs rule with a 1000 Schilling coin. Right now, you can buy the 1000 Schilling Austrian Gold Coin online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
If you purchase a 1000 Schilling Austrian Gold Coin through this product, you receive coins individually packaged inside of protective plastic flips. Each one of the coin is available to you in About Uncirculated, or Almost Uncirculated, condition. Coins in this condition show extremely-light to trace signs of wear and friction on the highest points. The mint luster is medium to full.
Obverse
On the obverse face of the 1000 Schilling Austrian Gold Coin is a depiction of Imperial Eagle of Austria as carried by the House of Babenberg when it ruled the empire. The eagle is featured with a heraldic shield on its chest, a sickle in one talon and a hammer in the other. The eagle is crowned and has broken chains on its talons. The German-language inscription of Republik Osterriech identifies the nation of issue as the Republic of Austria, with the face value inscribed at the bottom.
Reverse
The reverse side of 1000 Schilling Austrian Gold Coins bears the seal of Duke Friedrich II, also known as Frederick II, Duke of Austria. His official seal depicts a knight riding on horseback with a triangular shield designed after the shield of the House of Babenberg. The inscriptions on this face include the commemorative millennia date mark 976-1976 and Einsetzung der Babenberger. The latter is the German-language inscription for the ruling dynasty.
History
The House of Babenberg ruled modern-day Austria and other parts of Central Europe from 976 until the death of Frederick II in 1245. Frederick II was the fifth and final Austrian duke from the House of Babenberg, with his death at the Battle of the Leitha River opening the door to the House of Habsburg.
