The current design on the US half-dollar coin was introduced in 1964 by the United States Mint and is, notably, the last coin that was ever available with actual silver content in the coin. Kennedy Half Dollars debuted in 1964 and for just one year had 90% silver in the coins metal content. Right now, you can buy a $100 Face Value bag of 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars online at Provident Metals.

  • Only available date mark is 1964!
  • Contains .36169 Troy oz of actual silver content per coin.
  • Bears an individual face value of $.50 (USD) per coin fully backed by the American government.
  • On the obverse field is President John F. Kennedy.
  • The reverse side includes a modified Presidential Seal.
  • Please remember the bag includes only 1964 date marks.

The $100 Face Value bag of 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollar coins includes a total of 50 US half-dollar coins from the Kennedy Half Dollar design series. This collection debuted in 1964 and continues in production to this day, however, only the 1964 coins issued have 90% silver content with a 10% copper alloy included. All other coins have either 40% silver or the modern cupro-nickel alloy.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollar, you will find a left-profile bust of President John F. Kennedy created in 1962 by Gilroy Roberts. This design was originally intended for and used on the Kennedy Presidential Medal Series, but was rushed into production on the US half dollar in 1964 to honor the recently-slain president.

Reverse

The reverse side of 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars comes with a modified version of the Presidential Seal also created in 1962, but this time the artwork was done by Frank Gasparro. This image was also originally for the Kennedy Presidential Medal Series and used on the half dollar to facilitate quicker adoption and production of the new half-dollar design. It includes the American bald eagle, national heraldic shield, arrows of war, olive branch of peace, and a ring of 50 stars.

History

Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963, Congress acted quickly to honor the slain president on a national coin denomination. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy preferred the half dollar to honor her late husband rather than replacing President George Washington on the quarter. The US Mint was in the midst of removing silver content from its circulation denominations in 1964. As such, only the 1964 date mark for the Kennedy Half Dollar has 90% silver and 10% copper.
