Designs

The designs on the obverse and reverse of these $10 US Mint Commemorative Gold Coins will vary based on the coin series in which the specimen was issued. For example, in 1984 the US Mint issued gold commemorative coins in honor of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. These coins have Olympic runners with the Olympic Torch on the obverse and a version of the heraldic eagle of the United States on the reverse.

History

US Mint commemorative coins were first released in 1848 when a Gold Quarter Eagle coin was released by the US Mint with a CAL marking on it. This denoted the special release of the first US Mint gold coins using gold found in California during the California Gold Rush. The release of US Mint commemoratives continued through 1954 when President Eisenhower canceled commemorative coining amid declining interest.
