History

Engelhard was founded in 1902 by Charles W. Engelhard. Originally located in Newark, New Jersey, the company eventually settled in Iselin, New Jersey. The company formed an offshoot known as American Platinum Works in 1903 and is credited with the development of the catalytic converter. Engelhard eventually became the largest refiner and fabricator of platinum in the world, though it is no longer operational. Its 2006 acquisition by BASF resulted in the closure of its operations.
