The $10 Liberty, also sometimes dubbed the $10 Coronet type, features a female portrait of Liberty on the obverse. She is wearing a crown (hence the “Coronet” nickname) with the inscription “LIBERTY” displayed prominently. Thirteen stars (as a reference to the thirteen original American colonies) appear at the periphery. The coin’s date appears at the bottom. This motif first debuted in 1838 and, remarkably, remained in use until 1907. As such, the $10 Liberty was one of the longest-running coin designs in American numismatics.
Like many gold coins issued in the 19th- and early 20th-century, the $10 Liberty reverse shows an eagle with outstretched wings. The bird wears a shield and is clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This imagery represented America’s desire for peace, combined with its ability to defend itself in war. In 1866, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was added above the eagle’s head; coins dated before 1866 will not show this inscription. The denomination is expressed as “TEN D.” and appears towards the bottom.
The $10 Liberty Eagle was one of the most commonly-used coins of 19th and early 20th centuries. Until the $20 Double Eagle was created in 1849, the $10 Eagle was the U.S. Mint’s highest denomination. In addition to circulating widely, the $10 Eagle was often used by banks and financial institutions for large transactions. Many governments, including those in Europe and South America, chose the $10 Liberty Eagle for their official sovereign reserves.
These $10 Liberty Eagles are in Extremely Fine (“XF”) condition, meaning that they display moderate amounts of wear. In order for a coin to qualify for this grade, it must show virtually complete design detail, problem-free surfaces, and no major flaws. Most XF coins were in circulation very briefly and show just minor signs of use.
