The South African Krugerrand is the most widely owned gold bullion coin in the world, representing 46 million ounces since its introduction in 1967. The purpose of the original issue was to encourage individual ownership of gold, and it must be said that this objective has clearly been met by the Krugerrand.
Highlights:
The Krugerrands were originally intended to be used as currency in South Africa, and as such are made of a durable 22k (.9167) alloy of gold and copper. This alloy, known to historians as crown gold due to its use in English gold sovereigns, gives the coins their distinctive rich color and grants them a durability that bullion coins of higher purity often lack.
The Krugerrand uniquely has no stated face value: instead, its legal tender value is the bullion value of its gold at the current market price. South African Krugerrands are available in the following denominations: one troy ounce of actual gold content, measuring 32.77mm in diameter; one half-ounce, measuring 27.07mm in diameter; one quarter-ounce, measuring 22.06mm in diameter; and, finally, one tenth-ounce, measuring 16.55mm in diameter. The Krugerrand takes its name from the man whose portrait occupies the obverse of the coin: Paul Kruger, the last president of the former South African Republic. The reverse depicts a springbok antelope, one of South Africa’s national symbols.

Received my 1982 1ozt Kruger with a definite beautiful BU luster. Great coin in general except it has slight but naked eye noticeable abrasions just above the obverse relief and through the legend ending in some slight rim nicks that look a little too sharp to be bag marks; abrasion is a better descriptive word. Under a little magnification I could see some fine scratches angled parallel to these imperfections through the hair of the relief. Something in the last 36 years of the life of this coin came in contact with it and had some hardness greater that gold. I prefer perfect coins but for bullion this is not horrible and as I mentioned, the luster is fantastic. So. It?s a beautiful coin but not a perfect coin. But, overall I will keep it, however, the imperfections get it 4 instead of 5 stars. This transaction deserved a comment but I would like to add that I?ve bought many times from Provident and in general I have been very happy with the quality of the coins and service and shipping time I received."

Even tho it isn’t pure gold (22K, but an ounce of pure gold overall), and turns a kind of coppery color, some say that’s distinctive and like it, Bedsides, back in its heyday, in all the spy movies, this is how everyone got paid. A big ol’ heaving bag of Krugerrands looking like the million bucks that it was. Worth having a few in your collection for that reason alone. I don’t mind the color variation at all.

This is my least favorite gold coin, since its color fades from gold to a reddish-gold with age. I have a 1978, in almost pristine condition, and the detail is excellent and the background nicely reflective, especially on the side with the antelope. This was the first widespread gold coin minted, and shows its age. I prefer .9999 pure gold coins to the lower purity of the Krugerrand, but if resistance to scratching vs. color is important to you, this is certainly a coin that’s recognized and accepted worldwide.

Just picked up this coin from Provident and the coin more then met my expectations. The 1oz coin is in great condition and love the simple yet elegant design of the coin. Provident gave me a 1979 which was in excellent condition to my liking.

The good news is these are literally the gold standard but I find them to be the least attractive of the modern day coins on the market.
The are durable but dull. However they are recognized world wide.
