Obverse

The obverse side of each of these silver rounds showcases the Eagle lunar lander as it begins to touch down on the surface of the moon. After the landing, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin would become the first humans to ever walk on the surface of the moon. The third man on the mission, command module pilot Michael Collins stayed in orbit of the moon on the Columbia ship alone.

Reverse

The reverse face of these rounds is the same as all of the other rounds in the series. An eagle can be seen with outstretched wings and an olive branch in its talons as it prepares to land on the moon, much like the Eagle lunar lander did in 1969.

History

Apollo 11 was just the fifth manned spaceflight in the Apollo program. The goal of this mission was to prove that American technology and innovation were superior to the Soviet Union, who had successfully put humans in space before anyone else in the world. President John F. Kennedys goal of sending man to the moon and back proved to be a huge success, and nobody else has been to the moon since.
