In the Nordic Creatures Series, the Anonymous Mint offers five designs in all that include the destructive dragon Nidhogger, a Frost Giant, this image of Sleipnir, Garm the Hellhound, and the Great Eagle. Sleipnir is the name of Odins Steed and the beast is an eight-legged horse that serves as the war horse of the father of the gods.

Obverse

On the obverse of Silver Nordic Creatures Odins Steed Rounds, you will find the god known as Odin flying through the sky on the back of his war horse with a spear in one hand and his shield in the other. Sleipnir, as Odins steed is named, is shown with his eight powerful legs guiding him through the sky as ravens flank the horse and Odin.

Known as Yggdrasil, the tree has branches that not only reach the heavens, but also reach across all nine Norse worlds. This immense ash tree not only stretches far and wide above ground, but also beneath. The roots of the tree reach deep into the Earth to Niflheim, to the land of the frost giants, and to the human realm.

History

The steed known as Sleipnir is believed to be the product of a mare that emerged from the woods and lured away the stallion Svadilfari, a horse used by a stone mason building a wall between Asgard and the land of the Frost Giants and Mountain Giants. The god Loki emerged from the woods later in the evening with Sleipnir at his side, the eight-legged horse that Odin would claim as his war horse.
