Molon labe! This expression, Greek in origin, has roots in defiance and rebellion. The meaning behind the words is Come and take [them]! According to historys tales, the phrase was uttered by Spartan King Leonidas in response to Achaemenid Empire King Plutarch, Xerxes I when he insisted that the Spartans surrender their weapons. The 1 oz Silver Molon Labe Round, produced by Intaglio Mint, depicts the ferocity and victory of a Spartan standing over the bodies of his enemies, while a volley of arrows surround him. The round, with a design that has great attention to detail, is made up of .999 pure silver.

Round Features

  • Securely packaged in protective plastic flips, and mint tubes of 10 or 20 rounds
  • 3rd design in the Molon Labe series from Intaglio Mint
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Obverse features a defiant Spartan, standing over his slain enemies
  • Reverse features the Intaglio Mint logo, with sunburst rays

The expression Molon labe, once famously yelled across the battlefield by Spartas King Leonidas has evolved across the years to the defiant English version of simply saying, Come and take them when speaking about weapons or tools.

The Spartan Army was for many years regarded as one of the fiercest and efficient fighting forces. Despite their smaller numbers, the Spartans were better trained and better skilled than the opponents that they faced down in battle, which meant that more often than not they emerged from battle victorious. This series of rounds pays homage to the Spartans and their prowess in war.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 1 oz Silver Molon Labe round features a proud and defiant Spartan kneeling with his shield held up high to protect him from the incoming onslaught of arrows from his enemies. At his feet are the bodies of his slain enemies, warriors from the Achaemenid Empire. The Achaemenid Empire is also known as the First Persian Empire, today located in what is called Iran.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 1 oz Silver Molon Labe round features the Intaglio Mint logo, at the very center of the coin. The logo is set in a field of sunburst rays. The outer edge of the round is stippled, and has engravings that refer to the weight, purity and metal content of the round.

History

This design is the 3rd released design in the Molon Labe series of rounds, produced by Intaglio Mint.
