History
Tristan and Isolde is one of the most well-known European texts of the Medieval period. The 12th-century poems of Thomas of Britain and Beroul are the most popular and cast Tristan as a knight from Cornwall who defeats an Irish knight to win the hand of Isolde, an Irish princess. Tristan is to deliver the princess to his uncle, King Mark of Cornwall. Along the way, however, the two ingest a love potion that makes them fall madly in love.
