One of the most famous indigenous figures in American history is the Lakota warrior Crazy Horse. A member of the Oglala band of Lakota, he is believed to have been born between 1840 and 1845 and was a prominent wartime leader for the Lakota during the late 1860s and early 1870s as several Plains tribes banded together to push back against the incursions of American settlers on indigenous lands. Today, you have the opportunity to get the 1 oz Silver Lakota Crazy Horse Round online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

    • Arrives with an individual protective plastic flip or tube of 20!
    • Commemorates the legacy of Crazy Horse!
    • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
    • A bust of Crazy Horse graces the obverse field.
    • The American bison dominates the reverse field.
    • The appearance is more of a matte finish.

Oral records from the Lakota people suggest that Crazy Horse was a man of two personalities. A piece entitled Black Elk Speaks cited oral records from those who knew him that suggested Crazy Horse was known to be aloof, shy, modest, and even a loner when in-camp with the members of his tribe. However, it was also noted that he had a propensity for telling jokes when he was in his teepee with small groups of other people and also telling jokes on the warpath to boost the morale of his warriors.

Obverse

A front-facing bust of Crazy Horse is featured on the obverse side of 1 oz Silver Lakota Crazy Horse Rounds. A stoic Crazy Horse is shown with tall feathers woven into the hair at the back of his head and a tribal cloth over his shoulder as his long hair flows in the breeze. An ornate circular design is featured behind his figure with Lakota inscribed above. Crazy Horse earned the title of Shirt Wearer with his people by 1865. This title identified him as the war leader of his tribe and was given to him as a result of his fighting ability and generosity toward his fellow tribal members.

Reverse

The American bison is shown on the reverse of the 1 oz Silver Lakota Crazy Horse. In a design similar to that of James Earle Frasers Buffalo Nickel, the massive bison is shown in left-profile relief with a small mound of dirt under its feat. The round has inscriptions of Free & Independent Lakota, 50, AOCS Approved, and 1 Troy Ounce .999 Fine Silver.

History

Crazy Horse was an active warrior among the Lakota from a young age. It is said he killed his first enemy in the late 1850s, a Shoshone raider who had murdered a Lakota woman who was washing meat near the Powder River. He participated in the Battle of Platte Bridge and Battle of Red Buttes in July 1865, before featuring prominently in the Fetterman Fight in December 1866. His crowning achievement was his participation in the Battle of Little Bighorn.
