Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat is a famous Latin-era phrase that is said to have first been recorded by Cicero in the 1st century BCE. He cited the phrase as a Vetus Proverbium, or old proverb. The literal translation of the Latin means The strong ones, fortune helps. It has been translated over the centuries in various ways as fortune favors the brave, bold, or strong. History
Although the phrase Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat is first cited and credited to Cicero, it is believed that the phrase may have roots in Ancient Greece some three centuries earlier. The Ancient Greek philosopher Democritus coined a phrase reading boldness is the beginning of action, but fortune controls how it ends. Some have said that the Latin phrase is a rewording of this Greek phrase.
One of the modern twists on the phrase comes from the French microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur. He offered a twist on the phrase that read, in Latin, Fortuna Eruditis Favet, that translated as Fortune favors the prepared mind. The word Fortune is often capitalized because the Latin language referred to the Roman goddess of fortune, Fortuna, with its use of the word.
