Introduced in 1913, the Buffalo Nickel was an immensely popular circulation coin design in the United States for more than two decades. It was replaced by the Jefferson Nickel design that remains in use today, but the Buffalo Nickel imagery lives on in the annual release of gold bullion and silver bullion pieces from sovereign and private mints. Provident Metals now has 1 oz Silver Buffalo Rounds available to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase the 1 oz Silver Buffalo Round available here at Provident Metals, you will receive a specimen that is brand-new from the mint. Each round has proof visuals that include frosted designs and mirrored fields. The rounds will ship in individual protective plastic flips, acrylic tubes of 20 rounds, or boxes of 100 silver rounds housed in five tubes of 20 rounds each.
Obverse
A stoic indigenous native is found on the obverse of Silver Buffalo Rounds. James Earle Frasers design of the stoic figure was inspired by countless portraits of native leaders he had created earlier in his career. There was much conversation throughout the 1920s and 1930s about which individuals inspired the design, but Fraser himself identified his portraits of Iron Tail, Big Tree, and Two Moons as the source of inspiration for this right-profile figure. With braided hair and feathers woven in, the figure is depicted with inscriptions of Liberty and the Asahi mint mark.
Reverse
An American bison features in the reverse design of 1 oz Silver Buffalo Rounds. The American bison is shown in left-profile relief as it stands on a mound of dirt with an inscription of One Troy Ounce above and .999 Silver below. Fraser used Black Diamond as inspiration for this design. Black Diamond lived at the Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century.
History
The Buffalo Nickel was in production from 1913 to 1938. After it was removed from production, the Buffalo Nickel design would later be reintroduced by the US Mint as the face of the American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin in 2006. It is also commonly replicated on silver rounds, silver bars, copper rounds, and copper bars.
