Meme trading made its debut during the COVID-19 pandemic with the controversial GameStop phenomenon, a “short squeeze” triggered primarily by avid users of the Reddit /r/WallStreetBets. A floundering game retailer’s stock was pushed to nearly thirty times its valuation before the squeeze: it led to accusations of market manipulation, a congressional hearing, and a number of class-action lawsuits against the Robinhood app that had enabled the flood of “retail” traders who were most vocally involved in the squeeze. Ironically, it also led to major profits for a number of hedge funds who quickly got in on the action. Nevertheless, the “little guy vs. the man” image of “meme stock trading” persists and is at the core of the “Apes Together Strong” meme.
