The end of the Civil War in 1865 marked the beginning of the golden age of the Texas cowboy. With markets in the North hungry for beef and no railroads yet extending into Texas, cowboys drove massive herds north along trails like the Chisholm and Goodnight-Loving. These long drives, lasting months and covering hundreds of miles, cemented the cowboy’s place in American mythology. The cowboys developed a distinct culture, complete with its own language, music, and code of ethics.

History

Steer wrestling, also known as bulldogging, emerged as a rodeo event in the early 20th century. While its origins are disputed, many credit Bill Pickett, a Texas-born cowboy of African American and Cherokee descent, with inventing the sport. Pickett’s technique involved leaping from a horse onto a steer and wrestling it to the ground by biting its upper lip a method inspired by the way cattle dogs controlled steers. This evolved into the modern form of steer wrestling, which became a standard rodeo event by the 1930s.
