Obverse
The Gonzales cannon features on the obverse of Don’t Mess with Texas 1 oz Silver Rounds. This bronze weapon was loaned to Texas settlers by Mexico to help ward off potential attackers in the town of Gonzales. While the cannon was not terribly powerful, its mere presence helped secure the region and bring peace of mind to the settlers.
Reverse
The Dont Mess with Texas logo is found on the reverse of these Gonzales Cannon 1 oz Silver Rounds. Featured on all rounds in this series, this logo contains a Texas longhorn skull flanked with branches of olive and oak. There is also an outline of Texas carved on the forehead of the skull. Inscriptions are found as well that read DONT MESS WITH TEXAS, ONE TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER.
History
The Gonzales cannon was originally loaned to Texas settlers following an 1831 request from Green DeWitt. The weapon was a safety measure to help curb raids by the nearby Comanches. When colonists in Gonzales refused to return the cannon to the Mexican army, a skirmish ensued. This signaled a fracture in the relationship between Mexico and the colonists, paving the way for the Texas Revolution.
