Lady Liberty has featured on countless denominations of American currency over the course of more than two centuries. From the US penny and half dollar to the US Eagle denominations, Liberty has seen it all. However, no design is as highly regarded as the Saint-Gaudens Liberty design from 1907. Today, you have the chance to get 1 oz Copper Saint-Gaudens Rounds online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Augustus Saint-Gaudens created what has become one of the most beautiful and beloved American coin designs in history, but he did not live to see it struck and issued by the US Mint. Saint-Gaudens was commissioned directly by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help redesign American coinage, but after submitting his design in 1907, he succumbed to cancer and died before the US Mint struck his brilliant Liberty image on the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin.
Obverse
Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse side of 1 oz Copper Saint-Gaudens Rounds. This front-facing relief was designed by Saint-Gaudens to be struck in high relief, but the eventual design boasted a lower relief. Liberty holds a large torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. There are rays of sunshine emerging from the background to frame her figure and a ring of 50 stars around the design element representing each of the US states.
Reverse
An American bald eagle is shown in the reverse design element of the Copper Saint-Gaudens Rounds. The bird is used commonly across SilverTowne copper round releases with the eagles back to the viewer. The eagle reaches out with its talons as it flexes its wings to its back to slow its descent. The initials USA are inscribed beneath horizontal lines while a single star is featured in the lower-right field.
History
Augustus Saint-Gaudens original design envisioned Liberty being struck in high relief by the US Mint. However, in 1907 the US Mint lacked the technology to efficiently strike high-relief images. US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber lowered the relief of Libertys figure to make it possible to strike the coins with one blow.
