These cast gold bars are produced by first melting down gold to its liquid form and pouring it into prefabricated molds that give it the final shape. The Perth Mint then stamps identifying markers and a mint logo onto the fields of the bar. All markings are incuse, meaning the images are sunk into the surface of the bar.

History

The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 and was intended to serve as the third branch facility of the Royal Mint of England on the Australian continent. Following federation in 1901 to form a Commonwealth of Australia, the existing Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth Mint locations continued to strike British Pounds for use in Australia. Today, only the Perth Mint remains operational.
