Obverse

A beautiful image on the obverse of the 1 oz Gold 2020 South Korean Phoenix captures the mythical bird in flight. The Phoenix is said to have the power of regeneration and rebirth. As the bird ages, it will eventually burst into flames as it dies. From those ashes, a new bird rises to give immortality to the Phoenix. The swooping bird has its wings flexed out around the design element with its tail curling beneath its frame. The Phoenix is known to have long, beautifully colored feathers on its body and tail. There is a flame burst in the left field of the coin with a new version of the KOMSCO security image in the lower-left field. Inscriptions include Korean Phoenix 2020.

Reverse

The double-phoenix at the center of the design field on the reverse of 1 oz Gold 2020 South Korean Phoenixes is inspired by the Presidential Seal and Presidential Standard for the Republic of Korea. This field includes two Phoenixes looking inward at each other with large, half-circle wings framing their individual figures. The Taeguk symbol is in the center between the birds and a third Phoenix is depicted above. Inscriptions on this side include Republic of Korea, KOMSCO, and 1 oz Fine Gold 999.

History

In the 1970s, the Republic of Korea adopted the double-phoenix design for the Presidential Seal. The seal and standard represent the office of the President of the Republic of Korea.
