Only two men have major US coin designs that carry on to this day with their names attached as a synonymous label to the coins. Augustus Saint-Gaudens is arguably the most prominent with his $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle design. The other is George T. Morgan. His silver dollar design of 1878 was relatively unappreciated in its day, but is regarded today as a must-have collectible piece for American coin enthusiasts. Today, you have the chance to purchase 1 oz Copper SilverTowne Morgan Rounds online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with individual flips, tubes of 16 rounds, or boxes of 400 rounds!
  • Brings back the iconic Morgan Silver Dollar design!
  • Contains 1 AVDP oz of .999 pure copper.
  • On the obverse is Lady Liberty as designed by Morgan.
  • The reverse includes an American bald eagle.

George T. Morgan grew up in England and eventually started a die casting business. Unable to land a job with the Royal Mint of England, he came to the United States and earned an apprenticeship with the Philadelphia Mint in the United States Mint system. Within a year of arriving, he would create one of the most indelible Liberty images from American history.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1 oz Copper SilverTowne Morgan Round depicts George T. Morgans left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty. Heiress Anna Willis Williams sat through at least five sessions with Morgan to serve as the model for his image of Liberty. In the end, he created a Greco-Roman depiction of Liberty with the coronet crown on her head with the word Liberty inscribed and a wreath crown. The original design had E Pluribus Unum above with 13 stars and a date mark below. These copper rounds the no date mark and extra stars to fill in the bottom rocker.

Reverse

On the reverse of Copper SilverTowne Morgan Rounds is the image of an American bald eagle suspended in flight. The bird stretches its massive wings to cushion its descent as the letters USA are engraved next to it below two horizontal lines.

History

The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 by the United States Mint and enjoyed regular coining until 1904. It would not be newly struck again until 1921 when the US Mint restarted silver dollar production. This would only last until December 1921 when the Peace Dollar design was ready and put into production.
