The 1804 Dollar from the United States Mint was neither struck in 1804 by America nor released into circulation as a one-dollar denomination for use by the populace. The coins were produced as commemorative silver proof series in the 1830s and 1840s for use in American diplomatic missions throughout East Asia. Obverse
Lady Liberty is shown on the obverse face of the 1 oz Copper 1804 Dollar Round. This design was known by some as the Bowed Liberty image and depicts Liberty in right-profile relief. She is not wearing a crown and has her hair down, flowing freely behind her figure. The image depicts Liberty with an inscription of Liberty above her head, 1804 below her bust and a set of 13 stars around the edge of the design field. There are seven stars behind her head and six stars in front of her head.
Reverse
A powerful American bald eagle is shown on the reverse side of 1 oz Copper 1804 Dollar Rounds. The image features an American bald eagle as it swoops down to capture its prey. The bird has its wings flexed to slow its descent as it reaches out with its talons to grab some unsuspecting prey. Inscriptions include USA and a single American star.
History
Edmund Roberts was given a number of the 1804 Dollars for use in a diplomatic mission to Siam and Muscat. Roberts was to give the 1804 Dollars away as gifts to foreign dignitaries on his travels. He distributed the first sets of 1804 Dollars in 1834 and 1835, with additional sets ordered and given to Roberts, but never distributed. He died while visiting Macau and never made it to Japan and Cochichina to distribute the next sets on a new diplomatic mission.
