There are many ways for investors and collectors to get their hands on former US circulation monetary designs. While purchasing copper and silver rounds with historic coin designs is popular, many are not aware of the opportunity to purchase former banknote designs no longer in production by the US Mint. Provident Metals offers the 1 oz Copper $10 Banknote Bar with the historic 1901 design.
Highlights:
The issuance of banknotes in the United States has had a rocky history. When the Continental Congress issued paper banknotes to try and give colonials buying power amidst the Revolutionary War, the banknotes were hardly worth the paper used to print them. The first push to move the nation away from the gold standard occurred after the Civil War when more than $10 million in banknotes were in circulation. One of the first designs of the 20th century was that of the bison on the $10 United States Note.
Obverse
The obverse side of these 1 oz Copper $10 Banknote Bars feature the image of a bison in the center with the denomination of the note stamped in all four corners and two portraits included. These portraits depicted American military explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the duo chosen by President Thomas Jefferson to map the western lands the president purchased from France in the Louisiana Purchase.
Reverse
Reverse features of the 1 oz Copper $10 Banknote Bar include the depiction of Lady Liberty in front-facing relief. She emerges from between two columns with one hand held high in the sky.
History
The $10 United States Note had been in circulation from 1862 until 1923. The Lewis & Clark Bison design on the $10 note replicated on this 1 oz copper bar was designed in 1901 and used through 1922. It was eventually replaced with the effigy of President Andrew Jackson that is now commonly featured on the modern $20 (USD) bill.
