The Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins in this product listing feature a Mint State 63 certification. This grade was issued either by the Professional Coin Grading Service or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. A coin with this grade has a slightly impaired mint luster and numerous small contact marks with scattered heavy marks visible.
Obverse
On the obverse of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins from the United States Mint is the left-profile bust of Liberty. She is depicted wearing a tall feathered headdress and is surrounded by the inscription United States of America. This is the third version of Libertys bust on the gold dollar.
Reverse
The reverse face of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins includes a simple design. This design was used on the Type 2 and Type 3 design versions in the $1 Indian Gold coins. The face value 1 is inscribed in the center along with a date mark. Around it is a wreath that encloses the inscriptions.
History
$1 Indian Gold coins were introduced by the United States Mint following the California Gold Rush. The designs on this coin were created by James B. Longacre in 1849 with Liberty wearing a coronet. The Type 3 design built on the switch to the tall, feathered headdress used in the Type 2 design but featured a larger image of Libertys head.
